Durban City’s search for a new head coach has taken a decisive turn, with Ben Khalil Youssef emerging as the leading candidate to take charge of the ambitious KwaZulu-Natal side ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
The 2026 Nedbank Cup champions are in the market for a permanent successor to Pitso Dladla, who steadied the ship during an impressive interim spell that ended with silverware and a strong finish to their debut Betway Premiership season.
Dladla’s short-term impact followed a turbulent start to the campaign, during which the club cycled through Gavin Hunt and Sinethemba Badela before finally finding stability under his leadership.
That late-season resurgence not only secured top-flight consolidation but also ensured continental football for the first time in the club’s recent history — raising the stakes significantly for the next appointment.
Now, with African competition on the horizon, Durban City are prioritising experience, tactical structure and continental pedigree in their coaching decision.
Tinkler Talks Stall Over Structure
Former Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United coach Eric Tinkler was initially viewed as a strong internal contender for the role.
However, discussions between the two parties have reportedly slowed in recent days due to disagreements over the composition of the technical team.
Tinkler is understood to have requested the freedom to bring in his own backroom staff, a condition the club hierarchy were reluctant to fully accommodate as they look to preserve continuity within their existing football structures.

Youssef Gains Momentum
Ben Khalil Youssef has now emerged as the frontrunner for the job.
The Tunisian-born coach brings a blend of African continental experience and modern tactical education, holding a CAF A Licence and having worked within elite technical environments, including AS FAR Rabat.
His recent spell in South African football has also strengthened his profile locally.
Youssef first arrived at Kaizer Chiefs as part of Nasreddine Nabi’s technical team before later stepping into a co-coaching role alongside Cédric Kaze.
That partnership proved productive, with Chiefs finishing third in the Betway Premiership, securing CAF Confederation Cup qualification and returning to MTN8 competition.
For Durban City, that combination of continental exposure and domestic familiarity is seen as a major advantage.
Building for the Continent
Club officials are believed to be focused on avoiding another managerial reset, instead aiming to appoint a coach capable of building a long-term project.
With CAF Confederation Cup football now secured, the next head coach will be tasked not only with maintaining domestic competitiveness but also navigating the demands of continental travel, squad rotation and tactical adaptation.
Youssef’s profile is understood to align closely with those ambitions, particularly given his experience in structured technical environments and multi-competition campaigns.
